
At least 800 people have been killed and 2500 injured in an earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan. Afghanistan faces a deadly earthquake as tectonic plates collide and shift. Many people are injured across Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan provinces. Many women, children, and elders remain buried beneath the debris.
People are being rushed in emergency flights to hospitals in Jalalabad and Kabul. The earthquake has wrecked infrastructure. The quake lasted for 12 seconds, which led to 90% of infrastructural damage.
The villages surrounding Jalalabad have been devastated, with roads cut off by massive landslides. Due to the widespread destruction, the rescue teams and helicopters are struggling to reach the survivors. The UN and the Red Crescent are sending emergency help. This has been the worst earthquake since 2022. The rescue teams are looking for the survivors in the rubble.

In June 2022, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed many in provinces of Paktika, Paktia, Khost and Nangarhar. In 2026, another major earthquake killed 200 people in Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan. The year 2002 saw another 6.2 magnitude earthquake killing nearly 1000 people. In 1998, a series of earthquakes in the North-east claimed more than 4500 lives.
