Punjab to See Unusual Rainfall in October 2025, Says IMD

Punjab News: Punjab is still struggling with the changing weather conditions as per IMD weather update. According to the forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall some regions.  How rainfall is coming late or early for the Punjab monsoon 2025 is a critical question to answer.

The districts are affected by the Rainfall Punjab rainfall forecast.

Himachal Pradesh, the Jammu region, and Punjab will be affected. Basically this is for the catchment areas of Punjab rivers.

IMD or local weather department updates.

In the case of the Beas river, IMD predicted a cumulative rainfall of 182 mm for three days from 6 October to 8 October. On October 3, the prediction changed to 95 mm for the three days mentioned. For the River Sutlej, the IMD forecasted the catchment area rainfall of 70 mm. But the weather department revised this forecast to 19 mm. The catchment area of Ranjit Sargar Dam (Ravi River) was expected to receive rainfall of 201 mm from October 6 to October 8. However, on October 2, there was a change, and a cumulative rainfall of 121 mm is now forecasted.

Why has forecasting become difficult for catchment areas?

These are the reasons why forecasting for catchment areas is difficult for IMD:

  1. Regions’ complexity and typography- In the Punjab’s catchment area, there are mountains and plains, which create a unique climate.
  2. Extreme fluctuation in forecast models – There is a big difference between predictions and actual rainfall. Planning becomes difficult for dam authorities.
  3. Hindrances in capturing localized data – The local precipitation events and local upstreams that affect downstream flooding are not easy to capture.

In September 2025, floodwaters from the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers submerged thousands of acres of farmland and villages, causing widespread devastation across multiple districts. The Punjab government is preparing for additional water releases. But what is worrisome is water flowing in big quantities from unregulated streams.
