From Fandom to Frenzy in Karur: Why Indian Crowds Spiral Out of Control
Crowds are a part of our lives, but they turn into a disorganized brawl that is hard to combat.
There was a roadshow of actor-politician Vijay, which killed 41 people in Karur last week.
Vijay has a huge fan following in Kollywood.
The aftermath of this tragedy was challenging for Vijay.
Two of his party functionaries were arrested, as there was a demand for Vijay’s arrest.
For almost three days, Vijay was virtually unavailable.
On Tuesday, 30 September, he expressed pain at the deaths in a video. The irony is he was unable to convert his frenzied crowds into disciplined ones.
In an interview with Ani, it was said that even knives were used to stab people at the TVK rally. A woman who witnessed the stampede explains the NDA delegation.
On the day of the launch of iPhone 17 sales, the nation witnessed crowds engaging in a fight with bare fists.
Such rowdiness and hooliganism are not new in India.
- Some social situations make crowds end their own life.
- People lose a sense of order.
- There is a shift in the sense of responsibility of the crowd.
- People start behaving in a way they normally wouldn’t.
There are multiple reasons behind the chaos:-
- When crowd density increases, people have a sense of discomfort.
- Poor crowd management and insufficient security personnel to handle them lead to disorderly movement.
- Whether it’s a cricket match, a political rally, or an iPhone purchase event, the emotions of the people are high, which acts as a stimulus and escalates the situation.
- Behaviour of a few individuals can ignite rowdy behaviour from others also.
- Fatigue, stress, and alcohol can make people lose self-control.
Crowds are inevitable in a democratic country like India. Tragedy becomes unavoidable when enthusiasm crosses the line. The responsibility of crowd management lies with every individual and not just with the authorities. A celebration mustn’t turn into a catastrophe.
